This benefits her and humanity in the future because people need a sort of entertainment to help take their minds of serious issues. It was described in the quote, the television was left from morning till night. We can infer that Linda could not sleep and was really stressed about he health and about life in general that she left the television on day and night. This is has been going on till this day, people use various technologies to run away from stress. For example, smartphones, computers, etc.
